Definition of License

A license is a type of contract where one party who owns or has other rights in a piece of property agrees to allow the other party to make use that property. For example, a software license might give the licensee a limited right to use the software so long as the licensee paid the licensing fee. The license mechanism gives a party with a valuable asset the ability to monetize it without selling the asset entirely.
